Day 1 Recap

The first day went pretty well. The highlight would have been the rally on the capital, where a couple thousand AfP supporters gathered to hear from people who had their say on the health care “reform”.

The best ones were of course the Canadians who had to come to the United States to get health care for whatever reason. The residual message that stands out the most for me is the lady who was told she would have to wait a ridiculous amount of time in Canada just for an MRI, when in the US she got all the needed tests done in hours.

Now, I’m not a big fan of apples to oranges comparisons. All the “but this is how canada works” arguments are somewhat silly, as the US government will do things their own way regardless. It essentially doesn’t matter how well or how poorly it works in any other country. It doesn’t matter if the left parades out Stephen Hawking or a throng of happy folk from Chanuckistan, what we do in the states will not be the same thing. Ever. So let’s not pretend that “universal health care” is a universal term. It isn’t. Hell, we can’t even keep our post office running. The Senate just moved to privatize their restaurant because they can’t even run that. The whole thing is a joke.

No matter, it was good to see so many people get riled.

Usually the only people who take to the streets with such fervor are a minority group of sorts: blacks taking to the streets in a fight for equality, mexicans for immigration rights, gays for marriage rights, etc. Someone mentioned something to me that made me think a little bit, he said “I never thought I’d live to see the day where white people would be so pissed off that they would take to the streets against their government. And let’s not confuse this with anything else here guys, this is a predominantly white movement. Are we racist? no. There’s a handful of blacks, hispanics, asians, etc sprinkled about the flock. The way that I see it, most minority groups identify best with issues that personally affect them. It’s the separatist culture that the whites created that has done this. Divide people up into groups then get curious as to why they stay in groups years later. Go figure.

But this is a group that has wide appeal and we are talking about things across the board here. I honestly don’t understand why more minorities aren’t involved. Have the blacks forgotten the Tuskegee experiment? Alas, off to day2.
